The Lyndon and Helen Schmid
Charitable Foundation
has awarded a grant to establish a community
learning center at
1722 Bardstown Road
in the Highlands neighborhood of
Louisville,
KY.
The goal of The Schmid Highlands Center for Learning and
Spiritual Growth is to develop a learning community of
ordinary people, caring for one another as people respond to
God’s call for a just and sustainable world.
If you have a topic for a class you'd love to teach, come teach it in a fun and caring community education
setting. You'll be a part of establishing something
significant in the Highlands neighborhood.
Vision
Develop opportunities for learning and spiritual growth that
are simple, engaging, and accessible for people in the
Highlands area of Louisville.
Mission
To provide significant opportunities for learning and
spiritual growth that help remove barriers and bring people
together in order to promote justice in our community.
Operating Model
For the past 22 years, Bardstown Road Presbyterian Church
has promoted a Saturday Farmers’ Market in parking lot.
It is based on a model of bringing together local
growers with residents in the Highlands neighborhood.
It is a valuable interaction that enriches the health
and promotes the wellbeing of people in the community.
As the church has successfully brought together local
growers and neighborhood residents in the Farmers’ Market;
The Schmid Highlands Center for Learning and Spiritual
Growth will bring together popular local instructors and
neighborhood residents.
This Learning Center is an on-going legacy in honor
of Judge Lyndon and Helen Schmid’s commitment to the power
of community in promoting both justice and faith.
Instructors will be identified who can provide short-term
courses, workshop, seminars and public events that create a
learning environment for community building and spiritual
growth. The
range of topics will be determined by leadership
availability and the public response.
